   FIERLJEPPEN (DYKEJUMPING)

Fierljeppen is a sport which originated in Friesland, a northern province of Holland.

Every year the Friesians, Dutch, Belgians and of course us English get together at the NFM (World Championships) in It Heidenskip, to drink beer, have a good time and of course....... jump dykes !!!

The sport involves running along a jetty and grabbing a 13m pole, climbing up this pole as quick as possible while it swings forward (hopefully), then leaping from it into a sand pit... Frequently this doesn't go to plan and the participant ends up in the water (even the best jumpers in the World end up here..)
